Furniture chain with over 380 locations shuts store for good after filing for bankruptcy as more closures on the horizon

SHOPPERS are mourning the loss of another community favorite after a century-old furniture store announces its closing for good.

The popular southern retailer Badcock Furniture & More shocked customers last month when it said it would be permanently shuttering its doors.

All 380 Badcock Furniture stores across 12 states will take the axe.

But to soften the bad news, store leaders also announced a bonus.

There will be at least one more huge sale.

“All Badcock stores are closing! Up to 50% [off] merchandise while supplies last,” the chain wrote on social media in late July.

The retailer shared an honest explanation — and apology — for the closures on Facebook.

“We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude for being a valued customer of Badcock Home Furniture & more,” the post said.

“Regrettably, we are going out of business, and all stores will be closing over the coming months.”

The shop has been in operation for 120 years.

“We understand that comes with questions and have compiled some of the most frequently asked to help ensure a smooth transition for all our customers,” they wrote.

The U.S. Sun reached out to Badcock Home Furniture & More for comment.

The company’s parent company, Conn’s HomePlus, filed for bankruptcy in July, giving Badcock Furniture no choice but to follow suit.

All Conn’s Homeplus stores will be closed by October 31, representatives said.

Liquidation sales have already begun.

A final closing date for all Backcock Furniture stores has yet to be announced.

But some locations have already announced their end dates.

The Badcock in Cedarwood, Georgia — about 60 miles northwest of Atlanta — already warned customers that they would be closing in the near future, according to The Polk County Standard Journal.

All stores have also stopped offering financing for purchases.

However, customers who have financed purchases can continue to make payments online, by phone, or by mail.

SHOPPERS HAVE MIXED REACTIONS

Many shoppers expressed disappointment on social media to see the community stable disappear from the community.

“It’s so sad to see all these hardworking people lose their jobs, lots of these people have given many years of their life to this company,” one comment said.

“Badcock was always good to small-town people. You could always get quality furniture without breaking the bank,” a second wrote.

But some said they were not bothered to see the traditional retailer go.

“Not surprised. Went in once and thought they were extremely overpriced,” one person wrote on X.

“What are their sales reps that follow you around the store going to do?” another joked.

MORE CLOSURES

Conn’s HomePlus and Badcock Home Furniture & More aren’t the only stores closing in 2024.

Retailers nationwide are shuttering locations, whether due to security concerns, inflation, or changes in consumer demand and behavior.

Earlier this summer, Walgreens announced it would be closing up to 25% of its 8,000 locations, citing rampant theft as the main cause.

True Value, a Home Depot and Lowe’s rival, is also set to close several locations by the end of the year.

Restaurants and fast food chains have also been affected, with Olive Garden rival Buca di Beppo shuttering multiple locations over the last several weeks.
